At Neu Nutrition, we believe the most powerful thing we can offer the nutrition industry is not just great products — but hard-earned truth. That is why we are proud to share a recently published article in Express Nutra, one of India's most respected nutraceutical industry publications, written by our Co-Founder.

The article draws on the direct, personal experience of the team behind NeuMeal — gained through a previous venture where they built what is arguably one of the most scientifically rigorous personalised supplement systems ever attempted at a consumer level in India.

What the Article Is About

The piece tackles one of the most talked-about — and least honestly discussed — topics in nutrition today: personalised nutraceuticals.

With the global personalised nutrition market projected to reach USD 31 billion by 2030, and India's own nutraceuticals market growing at 11–13% annually, "personalisation" has become one of the industry's biggest buzzwords. But how many products truly deliver on that promise?

The article, titled "Is True Personalisation in Nutraceuticals Possible?", goes beyond the marketing narrative. It is a practitioner's account of what actually happens when you attempt to build genuine, science-backed personalisation — using DNA sequencing, gut microbiome profiling, and comprehensive lifestyle assessment — and deliver it to real customers.

The Science They Used

The supplement system described in the article was built on three layers of real biological data:

  • Genomic Analysis — Saliva samples were collected and sequenced to identify specific genetic markers (SNPs) that shape how an individual metabolises nutrients. This is the science of nutrigenomics.

  • Microbiome Profiling — Stool samples were analysed using 16S rRNA sequencing to map the gut bacterial community of each individual.

  • Lifestyle and Dietary Profiling — A detailed 50-question assessment captured diet patterns, sleep quality, physical activity, stress levels, and supplementation history.

From this three-pronged data foundation, a completely unique nutraceutical and probiotic blend was formulated for each individual customer. No two batches were identical.

What They Found: 10 Hard Realities

The science held up. The operationalisation did not — at least not yet. The article honestly documents 10 barriers that anyone attempting true personalisation in nutraceuticals will inevitably face:

  1. Cost of sequencing — Diagnostic costs alone reached ₹10,000 per customer before a single supplement was formulated

  2. Turnaround time — End-to-end lead time was nearly one month, far exceeding consumer expectations

  3. Questionnaire fatigue — A necessary 50-question onboarding process caused significant customer drop-off

  4. Individualised manufacturing — No two batches being identical made supply chain operations extremely complex and costly

  5. Efficacy and retention — Nutritional corrections take weeks to months; consumers expect faster results

  6. Complex logistics — Multiple touchpoints, with many sequencing centres located outside India

  7. The probiotic strain gap — Sequencing can identify 200+ gut bacterial species, but only ~20 are available in commercial probiotic formulations

  8. High manpower and scientific expertise costs — Requiring bioinformaticians, geneticists, microbiome scientists, and nutritionists simultaneously

  9. Science is still catching up — Most microbiome and nutrigenomics research is based on Western populations; India-specific data is nearly absent

  10. Regulatory and data privacy dimensions — Handling genomic data adds compliance layers under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023

Why This Matters for India Specifically

One of the most important insights in the article is specifically relevant to the Indian market — and it is one that the industry rarely discusses.

The Indian gut microbiome is fundamentally different from Western populations. Research including the LogMPIE study has identified Prevotella copri as the dominant genus in Indian guts, contrasting sharply with the Bacteroides-dominant Western profile. Yet almost all the science underpinning microbiome-to-nutrition recommendations has been developed on Western populations.

This means that even the most sophisticated personalised nutrition systems available today are, at their core, applying Western science to Indian bodies.

Building India's own microbiome research foundation — through initiatives like the Indian Human Microbiome Initiative (IHMI) and the Indian Microbiome Database (IndMDB) — is not just an academic priority. It is a commercial and public health imperative.

This is a problem the NeuMeal team thinks about deeply.

The Road Ahead

Despite the challenges, the article is ultimately optimistic about where personalised nutrition is heading. Emerging technologies that will reshape this space include:

  • Portable sequencing devices — Compact tools like Oxford Nanopore's MinION are making doorstep genomic and microbiome sequencing a realistic near-future prospect

  • Robotic precision manufacturing — Small-batch individualised supplement production is becoming more economically viable as automation enters nutraceuticals

  • AI and bioinformatics — Accelerating the translation of raw sequencing data into actionable nutritional recommendations

  • Wearables and continuous monitoring — IoT-connected devices will allow nutritional recommendations to adapt dynamically over time, rather than from a single point-in-time assessment

The Honest Conclusion

True personalisation in nutraceuticals is possible. The science is real. But affordable, fast, and scalable for the mass market? Not yet.

The constraints are not reasons to abandon personalisation. They are a map of the problems that need to be solved — and the team behind NeuMeal has experienced every one of them first-hand.
